When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced there was a mixed reaction from the public. Fans of the heroes were extremely excited to finally have the group join the Marvel cinematic universe. On the other hand, for those who had never heard of the galactic outlaws, the trailers left something to be desired. A bad-tempered raccoon, a talking tree and a couple of aliens teaming up with a man stuck in the 80s? It didn’t scream success at first light. However, once the movie was released it quickly became one of the most successful Marvel films to date thanks to a brilliant cast and the direction of James Gunn.
In the film, the Guardians encountered various Marvel characters and creatures that we’ve never before seen on the big screen. Yet, one Marvel character the movie did not show us was Nova. Rumors highly suggested that Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle, Saving Private Ryan) was going to take on the role of Nova for the film, but it never came about.
There was even concept art for the character in the book – Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art Of The Movie
Kevin Feige even said that Richard Rider (Nova) was in an early script.
So who is Nova exactly?
Nova is a member of an intergalactic police force called the Nova Corps whom possess and wield the power of the Nova Force, a source of simeless unlimited energy. The Nova Corps, who actually played a large role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, were portrayed as just the regular law enforcement personnel. To my knowledge there were no hints pointing towards Nova himself.
In an interview with WIRED, James Gunn, the director of the movie had this to say about Nova:
“I think certain people really like Nova. Quite honestly, I really don’t care. He’s not a favorite character. I don’t know whether he’s ever going to show up.
I like the Nova Corps, I just don’t like Nova that much! He’s okay, you know? I just don’t like that helmet!”
On Gunns Facebook page, he launched a post pertaining to studios that were jumping into the shared cinematic universes too quickly. This reflects Marvels cinematic strategy and how they took a long time before they had the Avengers or could make obscure films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Antman. In the comments of this post, fans were asking questions about Nova and Gunn had this to say:
“I don’t want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans. Sorry if that upsets you.
“…And I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn’t serve the movie right this moment.”
So, it doesn’t seem like Nova has been completely written off but we probably won’t see him in the cinematic universe for quite some time, unfortunately. Until then we’ll just have to follow the Nova Corps and adventures of the other heroes.
