This spring, a new Yu-Gi-Oh! spin-off series will begin airing titled Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. The show will star a new protagonist named Yusaku Fujiki – a high school hacker who isn’t a fan of being in the spotlight.
The title of the anime refers to a new type of technology called Link VRAINS, which allows players to duel in a virtual cyberspace area better known as Virtual Reality. In this VR world a duelist’s can change his/hers appearance, much like a character creation feature. In the VR world Yusaku is referred to as, “The Playmaker.”
Vrains will also introduce a new card-game mechanic for summoning monsters through a new process called Link Summoning. Link Monsters have no defensive abilities and must be summoned by sacrificing other monsters. Each Link Monster has a Link Number that tells you how many monsters you must sacrifice to summon it.
If you’re also a Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game player, then watching this show could be helpful as the link mechanic’s will affect the trading card game as well. For starters, two new Extra Monster Card Zones are being added to the field to represent each duelist. This extra zone will be the only place for monsters summoned from the extra deck, additionally the two extra zones are free territory and do not belong to specific player, any duelist can occupy these zones.
These are some big changes to the franchise and will more than likely reshape Yu-Gi-Oh! as we know it. A few other changes are coming as well, but those are the biggest additions we know of thus far. Stay tuned for Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains set to air this spring.
